The wetland ecological environment in Hulu Island (Hulu Dao) City is diverse and resource-rich. It is the main channel for the migration of coastal birds in China and the main area for breeding. It is also an important part of East Asian-Australasian Flyway. A total of 340 species of 151 genera and 65 families of birds were recorded in the region, 41 species of key protected birds in national I and II grades, and 146 species of protected birds in Liaoning Province. On the other hand, due to the characteristics of ocean tides, water quality characteristics, salinity distribution characteristics and other factors, there are abundant shallow sea benthic animals and intertidal biota in coastal wetlands, especially shellfish benthic species are fairly abundant.

Although it has many natural advantages, Hulu Island still faces many ecological problems. The wetland of the estuary lacks systematic planning and guidance, and it is difficult to give full play to the ecological function and landscape value of the wetland; human disturbance has an impact on the living space of birds; the level of government revenues leads to limited investment in wetland protection, etc.

The China Conservation Area for Waterfowl at Hulu Island (CCAfa) has carried out a series of protection actions against existing problems, such as organizing a special investigation team to investigate the background resources of wetlands, adhering to the concept of spreading wetland protection, and gradually improving public protection awareness of the ecological environment; establishing an intelligent video surveillance system, and gradually improving the scientific research monitoring system. The director of this CCAfa site Liu Junwu strives to lead the team to implement scientific and rational conservation approaches to effectively protect the coastal wetland ecosystem and improve the environment of wildlife habitats, thereby enhancing the ecological functions of coastal wetlands and achieving coastal wetland ecology. The system's self-healing and ongoing posture maintains and gradually increases the level of biodiversity within the region.

The national first- and second-level protected birds are numerous. Let’s hope that the team of the China Conservation Area for Waterfowl at Hulu Island led by Director Liu Junwu will continue to grow and attract more volunteers to join the frontline wildlife conservation cause.
