The Chinese Merganser Mergus squamatus is an ancient species which is called “living fossil of bird” The Chinese Merganser Mergus squamatus is also a species endemic to China and belongs to the first-class national key protection animal. Due to river pollution, water conservancy construction and forest logging caused by human activities, its habitat has become island-like and severely fragmented. The number of Chinese Merganser Mergus squamatus is extremely small. At present, there are two mains breeding places of Chinese Merganser Mergus squamatus, one of which is in Changbai Mountain.

The natural environment of Erdaobaihe Town in the Changbai Mountain area is relatively superior. There are 7 artificial nests and natural nests for Chinese Merganser Mergus squamatus. The Management Committee of Changbai Mountain Conservation and Development Zone attaches great importance to ecological protection. In 2012, the "Chinese Merganser Mergus squamatus " protection area was formally established. A research institution was established. The protection effect is remarkable, making the number of Chinese Merganser Mergus squamatus have steadily increased from less than 100 to more than 300 now.

In order to further strengthen the key protection area. on July 11, 2021, the China Biodiversity Conservation, CBCGDF and the Changbai Mountain Conservation and Development Zone Management Committee signed a strategic agreement to establish the "China Green Development Qiusha Protected Area?Changbai Mountain".
