CBCGDF PIL on Shanghai Hang Fa Lau Over-packaged Mooncakes Has Come to Trial: Pronouncing Sentence on June 3

On May 20, 2021, the first instance (online) hearing of the case of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (hereinafter referred to as the plaintiff) against Shanghai Hang Fa Lau Food Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Hang Fa Lau Food Marketing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Hang Fa Lau) for excessive packaging of mooncakes was held. 


The plaintiff launched an investigation in September 2020 after finding that a mooncake gift box named “Hua Yv Yue” sold by the two defendants had been excessively packaged in violation of national standards. Whereafter, the plaintiff submitted the prosecution materials to the Third Intermediate People’s Court of Shanghai and filed an environmental civil public interest litigation. It took eight months for the trial to begin. The first trial lasted an hour and a half, and the verdict will be delivered on June 3.
