On June 23, the Research Office of the CBCGDF received a report from volunteers that the dredging project was being carried out in the Daqinghekou Bridge area of Leting County, Tangshan City, and there were 400-600 plovers and terns’ nests on the banks of the dredging channel. In the bird's nest, about one-fifth of the eggs have hatched, and the remaining eggs that have not hatched are at risk of being cleaned and crushed. According to the volunteers: “Someone saw people pack up bird eggs here. They packed 3 boxes and took away a lot of bird eggs.”

According to the signboard, the project is the second phase of the comprehensive treatment project around the Daqing River Mouth of Tangshan Bay International Tourism Island. The 4.3-kilometer-long river channel removes sediment pollutants, dredges the flood discharge and drainage section, and at the same time improves the navigation conditions of the fishing port at the seaport. 

After the investigation on the spot, volunteers said: " After the first eggs are lost, the plover will lay eggs and hatch again if the time is right." However, with the continuous advancement of the construction of the second phase of the project, these bird eggs are facing the risk of being cleaned and crushed. The ideal habitat chosen by the birds will soon be cleared. Volunteers hope that the construction side can consider these birds and clean up the surrounding area first, and then clean up after these plovers and terns hatch and fly away. Therefore, based on the concept of harmonious coexistence between man and nature, the volunteers got in touch with the construction side and gave suggestion about this situation. The construction side stated that it will delay the process of construction in the area where the bird’s nest hatches. After the eggs hatch and the birds fly away, the construction of the dredging embankment will continue.

We need to commend the volunteers for their timely response and active communication with construction side, commend the construction side for their consideration of birds. The lives of the little plovers and terns continued, the number of birds is also increasing.
