China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) posted an article entitled "Applaud for relevant departments in Lianyungang City investigating and confirming the farm reported by volunteers is legal and within the jurisdiction of Xuzhou City". The relevant departments in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province have taken instant actions to thoroughly investigate the farm. After further investigation, it is confirmed that the red-crowned cranes have no relations to Lianyungang City. An officer in the local forestry authority said, "Through efforts and communications with multiple sides yesterday, the truth is that the illegal farm operated by Gao was banned long ago. The sold red-crowned cranes reported by the volunteer are verified that is held by a legal farm in Xuzhou."

The volunteer sent us his concerns the next day as follows:

1. The red-crowned crane is the first-class national protected animal. To breed the red-crowned crane shall be approved by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

2. At the same time, the breeding is still an illegal act even if the operator gets the approval from the state forestry authority because the red-crowned crane is not on the white list of creatures which are allowed for domestication.

3. The red-crowned crane is not in the Directory of Terrestrial Animals Under State Protection for Artificial Breeding (The First Group)

According to the Notice No.13 in 2017 published by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, red-crowned crane is not in the Directory of Terrestrial Animals Under State Protection for Artificial Breeding (The First Group). Photo credit: volunteer

Officers in relevant municipal departments say that these birds are all bred on the farm. (We take the notice that the animals in the left picture are Demoiselle Crane, the second-class national protected animal. Those in the right picture are suspected to be White-napped Crane, the second-class national protected animal.)

It is said that the operator of the farm in Xuzhou City is a known folk master at the breeding red-crowned crane.

The information on a phone of the suspect has verified that the red-crowned crane is bred in Xuzhou. Gao only shared the information into his WeChat moment. The pictures above show the interaction between Gao and the operator of the farm. Photo credit: an officer in the Lianyungang municipal forestry department

So, is it a legal farm that breeds dozens of red-crowned cranes? Does the farm in Xuzhou City obtain approval from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration?

If it gets official permissions, then what are the grounds?

Do the national and Jiangsu provincial forestry departments allow the operation of the farm for scientific research, medical production or exhibition for education activities?
