CITES COP18 postponed, CBCGDF continues working on relevant side events

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora’s (CITES) World Wildlife Conference (CoP 18), which was due to be held on May 23 and June 3 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has been postponed until October due to security concerns following a series of suicide bombings in Sri Lanka.

 

After a request from the Secretariat of the CITES and due consideration of security concerns and travel warnings following the recent bombings, Sri Lanka has decided to postpone the meeting.

 

A Tourism Ministry official said: "UN officials in Geneva made a request for an extension of the conference, which we first suggested mid-August. But since the middle of August happens to be the summer vacation, it was changed to October.

 

Previously, officials from Sri Lanka's Tourism Ministry and the organizers of the conference attended a meeting chaired by Sri Lanka's President, Prime Minister and several top officials.

 

The organizers and officials including the Secretary to the Tourism Development, Wildlife and Christian Religious Affairs Ministry, S. Hettiarachchi, Director General of CITES Secretariat in Colombo, Trevine Gomez and, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) Chairman Kishu Gomes are currently working on securing the venue for the conference in October.

 

China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has obtained the approval from related authority to attend the event, completed the registration, and successful bid to host the two side, which CBCGDF will invite the international wildlife conservation organizations to discuss the topics of illegal pangolin trade and the impact of infrastructure construction on wildlife and other relevant issues.
