The Belt and Road Initiatives (BRs) is the largest infrastructure initiative in human history including around 70 countries, and includes the Silk Road Economic Belt, a land transportation route running from China to Southern Europe via Central Asia and the Middle East, and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, a sea route connecting the port of Shanghai to Venice, Italy, via India and Africa. The potential environmental impacts of the mega-construction program could be severe and warn analysts. China has committed to B&R environmental and sustainable standards, but the sheer size of the initiative is caused for deep concern. The Belt and Road, while it poses new environmental threats to all of Asia and beyond, if managed properly and responsibly, could also offer extraordinary opportunities for green growth. The potential harm could be mitigated by adhering to international best practices.
