Serving as the ecological safety barrier in nature, connectivity refers to the extent that landscape and marine allow the species movement and natural ecological change, making it possible for species to migrate and disperse to forage and breed and for the human to combat climate change.

As detailed in the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) 2019 Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, we are making progress in achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Target 11, but few achievements have been witnessed in terms of another important aspect including connectivity and ecologically representative and well-connected systems of protected areas. The report highlights the importance of including connectivity into the future biodiversity goals as it plays a key role in water resources management, ecological restoration, eco-system service.

By international cooperation can achieve connectivity conservation. The current biodiversity strategy plan only requests to take action on the state level. Connectivity provides an approach for countries and stakeholders to reaching a consensus on the same ambitions, laying a foundation for further transboundary and international cooperation.

The next IUCN World Conservation Congress will be held on June 11-19, 2020 in Marseille, France. The delegation of CBCGDF will participate in the Congress. The 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15) is to take place at the end of 2020 in Yunan, Kunming. Therefore, the upcoming IUCN WCC 2020 is widely regarded as a significant event for the formulation of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

In accordance with the initiative of “deeply involved in global environmental governance” and advance global environmental governance and international cooperation on biodiversity cooperation from the perspective of civil society, CBCGDF has actively responded and supported the motion.

The motion requests the inclusion of connectivity conservation and international cooperation in the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and in other relevant initiatives such as the 2030 Agenda and the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030.

According to IUCN, 128 motions have been preliminarily accepted, three of which are proposed by Chinese IUCN members, including the motion Adapting Traditional Medicine to Fulfill the Vision of Eco-civilization from CBCGDF.
