On the afternoon of June 9th, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), was invited by Li Dihua, the Dean of the Graduate School of Landscape Architecture, Peking University of Peking University School of Landscape Architecture to attend The Peking University Protection Achievement Report of Swift and Beijing Swift Ecological Research and Cultural Protection Forum and gave some advice on the Swifts scientific research carried out by Peking University students. As their ‘senior fellow apprentice', Dr. Zhou also shared his own experience of growing up, sharing the experience of being awakened by the book “Limits to Growth” with all the people at the meeting, and on this basis, has been using the methods of research, practice and advocacy to promote more people to “awake” and thus participate in the process of ecological environmental protection. From “awakened” to “participant” to “shouter”, Dr. Zhou has been striving for this. His speech to be shared here with everyone and expect that more people to participate in exploring the future sustainable development.
In recent days, we are having a meeting with the National Forestry and Grassland Administration in Binhai new area of Tianjin for study another kind of migration bird, the relic gulls. Therefore, we suggest that the Natural office of Ministry of Natural Resources delimit the ecological red line and establish a national protection zone. We can also do the same work for swifts.
Dean Li Dihua and I met in the world's top think tank club of Rome and after 50 years later the release of another collective wisdom book flipped limits. Fifty years ago, the club of Rome published a book called ‘Come on’. This book is not only a research result, but also an explanation of the irreconcilable contradiction between human's unrestrained development and the earth's environmental capacity. This book awakened my awareness of the environment and ecology. When I read this book, I just at the same age with you, studied in Peking University. After fifty years later, the club of Rome published another result of collective wisdom ‘Come on’, written by the President of the club of Rome Anders Wijkman. As a executive committee member of the club of Rome, I wrote the preface to “Come On!”.
Swift as a migratory species should be pay the attention of the domestic and the international. China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) is an observer of the CMS (Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals), while the CMS is a department to manage and promote the protection of migratory species in the United Nations. As a kind of migratory species, the research and protection work for swift is necessary for CMS to understand and get its approval. At the theme Side Meeting of CMS CoP12 in 2017, Fred , the senior consultant of China Biodiversity Conservation＆Green Development Foundation told the participants of other countries about the protection story of the great bustard (Otis tarda), and convened a meeting of experts and volunteers from the country which is located next the migration route. In the future, we also hope to hold a meeting about swift. General Secretary Xi asked us to go abroad and participate the global governance, and the construction of the community with a shared future for mankind. We have now done the first step of research, just as General Secretary Xi mentioned in a recent report ‘building a community of shared future for mankind’ in a recent report. We should give the result in the next step.
In the preface, I recorded the course that I was awakened, for the realization of the ecological civilization and the importance of ecology awareness, I paid more than 20 years of practice. Today, I am awakened again by you. I feel that the level of students is really high, not only in terms of their knowledge, but also in terms of their understanding of the key issues of the country and the important point of development. Just like this, we, China Biodiversity Conservation＆Green Development Foundation, as a national first-class society, we believe that students' research should be recognized by the national first-class society. First, we should learn from you seriously. Second, we should reward your scientific achievements. Third, we are willing to provide funds to support further research and carry out specific work of population recovery. Whether it shows in the form of paper, book or project and etc., we believe that it is of great significance to promote people's understanding of ecological civilization and cooperation between man and nature.
In May of this year, the United Nations issued a notice saying that if human beings still follow this current development model, there will be 1 million species of organisms disappearing in the next 10 years. What is the concept! The extinction of biology we are facing now is already the biggest challenge facing us humanity. The biological extinction is the greatest challenge of human beings.
Since 1987, the earth has been in the overdraft mode. By the end of this year, the problem is getting worse, and the ‘ecological overload day’ of the earth comes earlier and earlier. Earth ecological overload day 2018 has been brought forward to August 1st which is the earliest record. This also means that the resources have been almost exhausted, the human come into the ‘NEET’ model.
Nowadays, I hope to cooperate with everyone and participate in the construction of the community of shared future for mankind. Today, your protection works of the swift teach us a lesson. I suggest that you write a book and record the results and methods of the work. This book will not only be a methodology, but also an excellent text and reference book. It will provide detailed and reference methods and reasonable gist for ecological civilization construction. Thank you!
