On November 14, the H20 Global River Cities Summit opened in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. The Summit was guided by the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government Press Office and the Hangzhou Municipal People’s Government. It was hosted by the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department, the Hangzhou Rivers Development Leading Group Office, and the Zhejiang Qiantang River Administration. It was supported by CBCGDF. Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary General of CBCGDF, was invited by the head of the organizers of the Summit, to give a keynote speech entitled “Green Development and Urban Civilization”.

As a high-profile Global River Cities Summit, H20 invited representatives from more than 20 countries around the world to discuss the future of urban development with all participants in the core concept of “Organic Development of Cities and Rivers”. Strengthen ecological governance and achieve sustainable development, and finally achieve the issue of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

At 10 o’clock in the morning, under the guidance of a song “The Song of the River”, which was performed by the Hangzhou Opera House, the Summit kicked off. After the organizers of the Summit and the leaders of Hangzhou City, the representatives of the international cities invited to participate the event made wonderful speeches on behalf of their own cities. Among them, they mentioned: “The spirit of human action may cure the wounds of Mother Earth. I hope to advocate and unite the global forces to jointly address the current environmental challenges.”

In the keynote speech, Dr. Zhou mentioned that this Summit is the best platform for participating the global ecological governance. Everyone comes together because of the river, because of the common ownership of an important city river. Everybody get together here to discuss the harmonious development of ecological rivers and humans. Then, starting today, everyone can stand on the world stage together and explore ways of ecological governance including river governance by spreading ideas and exchanging human civilization. Currently, CCICED has achieved no plastic. Whether we can achieve change today is crucial to the advocacy and development of ecological civilization.

Earlier, at the relevant preparatory meeting for the Summit, Dr. Zhou had a more detailed statement about this: Hangzhou is located in the south of the Yangtze River, and in 1999, put forward the “Opinions on Implementing the Strategy of ‘Supporting the Development of the River’ ” and the concept of “Hangzhou’s Four-Year Action Plan for the Development of the Yangtze River” has long recognized the importance of the green development suitable for employment, livable, and suitable for tourism. Not only in Hangzhou, but also in the future, the development of the city needs to be closely related to the two aspects of “biodiversity of the city” and “green development”.

As a major enabler of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, CBCGDF has carried out a series of work related to biodiversity conservation in several cities in recent years. In 2014, in order to save the rare and endangered plant species Acer pentaphyllum, to protect the biodiversity of southwestern China. CBCGDF establishes a special working group for rescuing Acer pentaphyllum, and simultaneously launches a special fundraising campaign for the protection of the plant species. The funds are all used for the protection and publicity of the species populations, the research of related topics and the protection of its living environment. In addition, CBCGDF has carried out a series of fruitful green actions such as “reducing plastics, picking up plastics”, reducing light pollution, preventing hardening of urban embankments, advocating greening of urban gardens and “letting wild grass grow”.
