In September 2018, the H20 Summit’s Hangzhou organizers visited CBCGDF and exchanged their specific work arrangements for the 2018 Global River Cities Summit in Hangzhou from November 14th to 15th. Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of CBCGDF, elaborated on the themes for the Summit, from the themes, key content, organizational system and specific activities.

For the theme of this Summit, Dr. Zhou put forward three recommendations:

I.               Sustainable Development

This is an international issue. Among the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, there is much about urban development, so it is easier to be accepted by the world and is a concept that is easier to globalize.

II.             Biodiversity

In 2020, the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15) will be held in Beijing. As the host country, China is fully preparing for this meeting. In 2010, the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP10) adopted a revised and updated Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, including the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, for the 2011-2020 period. 2020 is the last year of the “Aichi Target”.

Dr. Zhou believes that the current updated thinking is more important for urban protection and development. The core of our “Beijing Goal” is urban protection and development. Moreover, urban biodiversity conservation is particularly important. This idea will undoubtedly lead the transformation of the city. For the city, the most important thing is the protection of the beautiful environment and the historic changes. We must be able to take the lead in clearly articulating the hopes of the people, because the people’s pursuit of a better life is changing.

III.            Ecological Civilization and Green Development, building a Community of Shared Future for Mankind and Participating in Global Ecological Governance.

A few key points:

The release of the H20 Declaration requires preconceptions and different insights into the future. Only by comparing and communicating, clearly and concisely understanding the foresight of the future, can more ideas resonate and form a cohesive force. We should sincerely invite the team to do a good job together and reach a consensus. We must have an international perspective to form an influence and appeal to the international community.

Organization of the Summit:

Not only the Secretariat, but a committee to form an operation. Think carefully, learn, and form a breakthrough in the traditional bondage. It is necessary to enable everyone to enter the broad collective of friends. A meeting must be able to continue its vitality. After forming a committee, it will be worthwhile to work hard in this direction and maintain it. The needs of the participants can make the meeting a benign experience. The method of issuing questionnaires may be adopted, the content may include artificial intelligence, big data, and corresponding urban management measures, and so on.

Recommendations for Summit activities:

The details of the activities can be referred to the condition of each attendees and volunteers, so that all attendees can get the most benefit and let them have the feeling of wanting to attend again. Even though money is one aspect, what is more important is the idea of innovation. With different innovative ideas, we can respond to different needs, produce plenty of products and services, and ultimately make this meeting a good experience. We must take the unique and innovative ideas to lead the future.

Dr. Zhou finally recommended that different people should elaborate on various aspects such as urban planning, ecology, cultural economy and finance. Be sure to invite the best international speakers to give a speech. H20 Hangzhou organizers hope that Dr. Zhou can give more guidance from the level of hosting and issuing declarations to guide the attendees to grasp the concept of ecology, urban rivers and biodiversity from a macro perspective.
