ZHOU Jinfeng: Five Suggestions on Beijing Winter Olympics by Reducing Use of Woven Flowers
2022/2/5 10:27:00 本站

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation, just watched the news. He found the flowers used by the 2022 Winter Olympic Games are woven. He has something to say.
134.pngIf the yarns used by the colorful fabric flowers are made of pure cotton or wool, it means that there is a chemical process in dyeing; If the materials added chemical fiber composition, in fact, these plastic decorations can be seen as equivalents to plastic flowers which Zhou Jinfeng has strongly opposed.

With plastic pollution has become a global challenge and the "Green Olympics" has become the mainstream advocacy, Dr Zhou put forward five suggestions:

First of all, he hoped that the Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympic Games could strictly limit the use of these flowers or minimize the use;

Secondly, If it must be used, he suggests reuse; one-time-use should be avoided;

Thirdly, he hoped that after the Olympic Games, the plastic flowers would be handed over to CBCGDF for recycling.

Fourth, He suggested that the event planning of large-scale activities and conferences can refer to the <Green Meeting Standards>, China's first national group standard in Green Meetings, issued by the CBCGDF. Because now many event-organizers have misunderstandings about what is a real "green meeting". The Green Meeting Standards provides a very comprehensive and easy-to-follow guidance, and can promote the synergies between biodiversity and climate actions.

And last but not least, a worrisome drawback of this approach is the praise for plastic and fake flowers, as an unhealthy fashion, will lead to a large number of imitations in the future. Although the CBCGDF have advocated "Say No to Plastic Flowers" for a long time, the use of fabric flowers are still very popular in hotels and schools. If the world-renowned 2022 Winter Olympic Games advocate the use of such flowers, it's possible that the advocacy will further encourage the consumption of plastic and fabric flowers, which will be a very negative thing for our country's goals on carbon neutrality, biodiversity and ecological environment.
