Should Poyang Lake Build Floodgate? Zhou Jinfeng: We Should Ensure the Ecosystem Connectivity and Adopt Nature-based Solutions

Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province is the largest freshwater lake in China. It is of great significance to the ecological protection of the Yangtze River. It is one of the most important wintering grounds for waterbirds in East Asia.

On January 5, 2021, the official website of the Department of Natural Resources of Jiangxi Province publicized the pre-examination and site selection of the Poyang Lake Water Conservancy Project in Jiangxi Province before approval.

Should a floodgate be built in Poyang Lake? What will be the ecological impact? Especially before the "Yangtze River Protection Law" is about to be implemented on March 1, the publicity before the approval has been hurriedly carried out. Has it fully considered its ecological impact? ...

For this reason, on January 11, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Research Department held a discussion meeting around the publicity before the approval of the Poyang Lake Water Conservancy Project construction project. The following is part of the speech by Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of CBCGDF at this meeting.

Dr. Zhou pointed out that the latest scientific research has made it very clear that the most serious fact for the destruction of biodiversity is that people change existing natural uses and conditions. This is one of the most serious damages to the destruction of biodiversity, changing the state of nature on a large scale.

The entire Poyang Lake area is rich in biodiversity, and the connectivity of the ecosystem should be guaranteed first, and nature-based solutions (NbS) should be adopted.

Under today's macro-policy of "all-for-all protection and no major development", we are still doing this, which is fundamentally wrong. Many of the so-called ecological projects we have built are actually pseudo-ecological projects, which eventually evolved into projects that destroy nature. Until now, in the era of ecological civilization, we should no longer pretend to use the viewpoint of industrial civilization to do this kind of bad destruction.
