Zhou Jinfeng: To Avoid Serious Damage to Biodiversity by the Project, it is to Protect (II)

We have seen many so-called "ecological projects", and even some are called "biodiversity conservation projects", but they have become major projects that destroy biodiversity. There are also some "ecological restoration" projects, which may not be deserved.

In the recent follow-up treatment of the Tengger Desert pollution incident, we saw a remediation plan made by a top pollution remediation company (listed company). Its remediation plan is called "ecological remediation"-very interesting, now pollution prevention and control are no longer called "pollution prevention and control", and now forest tourism is not called "forest tourism", and they are called "ecological xx". For example, forest tourism was renamed "ecotourism"; this pollution prevention was renamed ecological restoration. Although the name of such a project is nice, is it really ecological restoration? no. Look at its plan: the first operation is to take soil around to fill the pit here.

We know that natural habitats are diverse, hills are also natural habitats, and hollow place is also a natural habitat. With different natural landforms, it breeds different biodiversity, and the surrounding soil is also surrounding part of biodiversity. The process of taking soil and the process of landfill are both processes of destruction of biodiversity, which can basically be so affirmed. In addition, this "ecological restoration plan" will further plant trees, water, apply fertilizers, and spray pesticides to fight insects. An important project called "deworming" is also added to this project.

We all know that insects are an important part of biodiversity. In other words, assuming that we can grow crops, we can carry out deworming; but if we do ecological restoration, biodiversity restoration, or major projects of biodiversity in a region, we should put "deworming" as an important content? It's ridiculous. Because insects are part of biodiversity. Ecological engineering is not a crop but should really pay attention to the natural conservation of biodiversity. So, I believe that the major projects of biodiversity must be done a little bit more, but what is more important is to protect nature and protect the ecology.

Our current natural ecology has been destroyed by various projects-road engineering, power supply engineering, municipal engineering, etc. There are many facilities that need to be built for the people's good life (to guarantee the power supply for life), and we do not object to these projects; But can we consider more about these projects? It is important to minimize some damage to biodiversity.

There are also many successful examples in avoiding damage. In fact, it is not difficult. It only requires us to seriously investigate and study and use the principle of prudence to avoid damage. To a certain extent, we can protect and develop both.

For example, there is a kind of migratory bird called sand martin. In March this year, we received a report from China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) volunteer that a river renovation project with a total investment of more than 370 million yuan in Yuanshi County, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, but this project will be completed by the end of April will cause sand martin, who has returned from a long distance migration, to lose their only habitat in Yuanshi County. In fact, as long as you pay attention to it and do not destroy it deliberately, the development of this river regulation project and the protection of the bird's habitat are completely compatible.

Therefore, CBCGDF quickly joined the experts to carry out an emergency rescue operation and obtained the support of the local government. After two months of work, the river project has not only been delayed, but also avoided the destruction of the breeding area of sand martin, and vigorously raised the awareness of local biodiversity protection. On May 21st, when the CBCGDF volunteers visited the area, they found that more than 3,000 sand martins had flown back and were very lively. They have started making nests there.
