Recently, relevant departments of the Fengtai District have launched the Nanyuan Wetland Park Construction Project to renovate the original environment and build a brand-new wetland park. Over 600 mu of buildings have been removed from the core area “Dapaozi". Different views have been sparked. Volunteers of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) believe the project is superficially ecological, but poses significant damage to the environment, while some locals believe the project would contribute to environmental protection and restoration of the river system. So, what is the real condition? Let's hear Dr. Zhou's thoughts on it.

CBCGDF have conducted a survey 18 years ago and found that the biodiversity in Beijing is in extreme extinction as urban infrastructure development occupies habitat for creatures. Now, Dapaozi, the only remaining habitat in the suburb of Beijing, is witnessing the construction project on a large scale, indicating the last pure land is disappearing- a calamity for biodiversity conservation at the local level.

Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets. Lucid waters and lush mountains are landscapes that give life to microorganisms, flora, and fauna. These habitats have been interfered with and destroyed by the so-called ecological projects. A sewage prevention project launched in the Old Summer Palace disrupted soil functions, including nutrient cycling, water maintenance, carbon storage, and so on, leading to the death of underground creatures. The on-going wetland construction project will cost 38.71 million yuan for the design in the first stage and 4.65 million yuan for an on-site investigation. What we are rejecting is not environmental governance or wetland construction, but the methodology people adopted. We should follow the principle of nature, and conserve the nature within current conditions.

Over the past years, biodiversity has been highlighted by an increasing number of enterprises. The standard formulation and talent cultivation have large space to improve. Engineering experts have achievements in a certain area in the background of Industrialized Civilization, though lack knowledge in ecology. By contrast, grassroots volunteers who are active in the frontline of environmental protection have acquired a lot through their numerous field investigations.
