On the afternoon of April 1, 2020, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) urgently organized an Expert webinar on Protection of Sand Martin in Yuanshi County”, centering on the local breeding grounds destruction of sand martin in Yuanshi County. During the online meeting, CBCGDF experts and frontline volunteers found that the last surviving breeding ground on a sandbank in the middle of the river channel had been destroyed.

In the wake of that, the experts immediately set up CBCGDF Sand Martin Protection Expert working group and sent another letter to Shijiazhuang Municipal Government, calling for urgent, official protection for the sandbank in the Yuanshi County reach of Huai River. The CBCGDF experts reached a consensus that this small sandbank would not impair the flood-control function and river drainage. Therefore, people should take effective measures to protect this only habitat for sand martin and black stork from any further destruction caused by construction. Meanwhile, the nests of sand martin and their fluttering can be a unique landscape. CBCGDF suggest remedying the destructed sandbank, building it into a platform of science education, eco-civilization, and eco-tourism.

Sand martin the species is of great significance in ecology, economy and scientific research. Its food consists of small insects, mostly gnats and other flies, so sand martin can protect crops from a pest infestation, maintaining food security and ecological balance. Every year around April 15 is the peak period when sand martin migrates to Shijiazhuang City. It is vital to ponder how to double mankind’s efforts to protect sand martin in Shijiazhuang City and mitigate the conflict between nesting and ecological project.

Protecting wild animals like birds is an important part of ecological conservation, and inspirational goal for building a beautiful China and a vital step to achieve the vision of “harmonious coexistence between man and nature”. Since the conflict as that between sand martin habitats and construction project occurs every year, CBCGDF Sand Martin Protection Expert working group also suggests to holding “Shijiazhuang City Sand Martin Protection and Sustainable Development Seminar” in which people can develop a long-term mechanism to balance economic development and ecological conservation. The ultimate goal is to present the superlative achievements Shijiazhuang City has gained in building a Beautiful China and securing the harmony between man and nature.

By now, CBCGDF Sand Martin Protection Expert working group has received the invitation letter from Yuanshi County Natural Resources and Planning Bureau. The Bureau sincerely invites CBCGDF and the sand martin protection experts to visit Yuanshi County as soon as possible to better protect the sand martin in the reach of Yuanshi County of Huaihe River. Yuanshi County will also organize the departments concerned to conduct field investigations, discussions and finally develop feasible measures to protect wild species through coordinated efforts.
