According to incomplete statistics of the pangolin working group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), since January 2019, domestic customs have confiscated 123.477 tons of illegally smuggled pangolin scales.

On December 11, CCTV News, People's Daily, the Paper, China Daily, GMW.cn and other media disclosed that after nearly one year's investigation, Hangzhou Customs Anti-smuggling Bureau and Wenzhou Public Security Bureau jointly cracked a smuggling case of endangered wildlife and its products, arrested 18 suspects, and seized 10.65 tons of pangolin scales on the spot. After investigation, the criminal gang has been suspected of smuggling 23.21 tons of pangolin scales in the past two years, which means more than 50 thousand pangolins have been killed.

CBCGDF pangolin working group urgently contacted the relevant departments, hoping that as a social organization, it could participate in the subsequent work, enhance the credibility of the customs, especially in order to put an end to the illegal smuggling of pangolin scales and truly protect the pangolin, the social organization representative could supervise the destruction of the illegally smuggled pangolin scales and finally avoid those pangolin scales enter into the market again.
